Chronic Pain and Long-Term Medication Management

For some patients with chronic pain, long-term (chronic) opioid medication may be one part of a broader plan. We approach this carefully and follow Washington State opioid prescribing rules. Care may include:

  • A thorough evaluation of your pain, health history, prior treatments, and current medications.
  • A written treatment agreement that explains goals, expectations, and safety steps.
  • Regular follow-up visits to review pain, function, and side effects.
  • Monitoring, such as checking the Washington Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and urine drug screening as appropriate.
  • Combining medication with non-opioid options and joint injections when appropriate.

Opioid medication is not right for everyone. Any prescribing decision is made by your provider after a clinical evaluation, and a prescription is not guaranteed.

Coordinated Care With Your Other Providers

Chronic pain can affect sleep, mood, and daily life. When it may help, we coordinate with other specialists to support your care, including:

  • Psychiatrists and mental health specialists
  • Interventional pain management specialists
  • Your primary care provider and other specialists as needed
